What is the meaning of a mixed codec timeline and what are the benefits to a user?
With Media 100 products, users have the ability to mix-and-match codecs in a timeline, play them all back in real-time and even lay them off to tape without having to standardize or render down the timeline to a selected codec. Users are able to take advantage of this technology in both HD and SD resolutions with the added comfort of knowing the playback is real-time, frame accurate (i.e. no dropped frames) and not a preview.
Let's examine this a little further.
First, we will Acquire or Import some media files in codecs that are natively supported within the application. These codecs include: Media 100 HD (8/10-bit Uncompressed), Media 100 i, Motion JPEG B, Animation (with motion alpha), DV, DVCPro, DVCPro 50, DVCPro HD, Apple Intermediate, Apple Uncompressed 4:2:2 (8/10-bit). Here is a bin containing media files in all of the codecs referenced above.
Next, we will take all of the media files from the Bin and drop them into a SD 16:9 timeline. This will give you a mix-and-matched codec timeline. Now hit Play. You will immediately notice the frame-accurate, real-time playback.
Finally, let's take this timeline and Master-to-Tape. Simply go File>Master-To-Tape, click on the 'Master' button (after adjusting your record settings) and watch as the timeline is laid to tape without ever having to render-down or standardize your timeline to any one codec.
